Science Class

Science Welcome to the wonderful and exciting world of SCIENCE !  As we begin a new school year, I offer a warm welcome to each student and especially to the new students who have joined us. The theme for this school year is MERCY.

Pope Francis has declared the Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy beginning on December 8th, 2015 and ending on November 20th, 2016.  He has proclaimed this year so that the Church “with renewed enthusiasm may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind”. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful”. (Luke 6:36)

We are invited and challenged to take this mission  and act upon it.

This year, we will be exploring the vast realm of plants, animals, bacteria, fungi, and protista, as well as every manner of matter and its influence and role in our wonderful world.  Students will gain new knowledge, but will be constantly reminded that science is an everyday reality.  We experience science every day through exercise, rest, nutrition, athletics and good health, as well as utilizing the scientific method in order to solve problems and make sense of the quandaries in our lives.

Because scientists are always challenging and questioning the diverse and ever-changing world around them, they are called upon to use the scientific method as a means to formulate new theories.  Every day, scientists are changing or even disproving previously accepted theories when up-to-date technology, newly discovered data and evidence or mistakes in previous testing have motivated  them to take a second look.  Skepticism helps scientists question the assumptions that influence how we perceive the world.

We also present and discuss relevant pieces of information as presented by the media – items which have a scientific base. Science is an ever-changing, evolving field full of bright minds seeking out answers to the age old questions that have fascinated humanity since the dawn of time.

Once again, I welcome you to a year full of exploration and discovery, and may the knowledge you gain inspire you to continue your research in the future. I look forward to working with you all, and my wish is that our year will be blessed, successful and merciful.

God bless you all.
