Welcome to First Grade!

First grade is an exciting year on your child’s educational journey.  I am so happy to have the privilege of assisting your child in developing his or her academic skills this year.  As a class, we will read a lot each day, as reading is so important!  I hope that your child learns to love reading and to appreciate how much fun reading can be!

In Reading, we will learn to use reading strategies, use nonfiction text, and learn more about the characters in our stories.  In Writing, writers will be expected to build their writing capabilities by writing using a variety of genres.  These genres include: narratives, informational, persuasive, and poetry. In Religion, we will be celebrating the Year of Love and we will learn about our religious holidays, how God sent his own Son to us, and that the world is God’s gift to us.

In Math, we learn so many new things!  We will introduce the new Math program Bridges.  We will continue to study addition and subtraction facts and become fluent with these facts.  We also create and solve story problems.  We will work in base tens, and students will be able to create numbers using tens and ones.  Students will be asked to count from any given number to 100 by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.  In class we will begin to measure using nonstandard units of measure.  We will also compare object lengths.

This is a very exciting curriculum for our students.  First Grade is such a special year for children.  It is also a fun-filled year with our First Grade Opera and the First Grade Buddy Basketball Game.  I am so happy to be a part of your child’s learning.  I look forward to seeing each and every student grow and succeed this year!

Throughout the year celebrate your child’s success, no matter how big or small it may seem.  This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work!
